Implying the magic of the island could be used for so much good, but instead they keep it to themselves. A terrifying upside to this is that the food never expires, rots or degrades, and seems to be infinite once made. Which implies your aunt herself never knew or kept a record of how to make the food, forcing you to deal with the townsfolk.Īnd when cooking the food, you are magically in inexplicably reduced to the size of an ant, forced to combine foodstuffs into the recipe of your choice. Most of which only exist to sell you things for your café such as furniture, clothes and recipes for food. The other towns inhabitants also have their own dark secrets, some of them are even witches themselves, people deluded into thinking they are owls and a mysterious black-market cat who only speaks in meows. Other spells she can give you not only effect animals directly but can bend and break the fabric of time and space, and that sort of power she has no issue giving to you for a low, low price despite you being completely normal and inexperienced. One spell required by the game to progress turns whatever unfortunate animal you cast it upon to be larger / smaller. You are even encouraged to mutate animals yourself by the local self-mutated half human, half cat witch, by buying spells off her. It affects many of the animals you meet around the island, mutating them in strange ways. The island is infested with black magic, which all the inhabitants consider cute, fun and worst of all normal. When reaching the Café, you are greeted by a strange woman named Kiva who claims to be the local towns mayor and introduces you to the abnormalities of the island. The plot put simply is you are an outsider, who inherited your aunts Calico Cat Café on a remote island after she mysteriously passed away. Where do I begin? Even people who have played the game on the surface might not even realise its true nature, but under the surface if you read into it, the more you dig the more horrors you uncover. There’s some great foundations here, I just hope the developers work more on it.Ĭalico is a horror game, disguised under a animal loving, café owning, friendly fun adventure. LGBT representation in video games is rare, the artstyle is extremely cute, and having a cat cafe with a tiny horse is everything I’ve ever wanted, really. I’ve been really harsh on this game because I want it to be better. You could, theoretically, leave the game running for as long as you want to and never fail. You don’t even need to be at your shop to make money. You don’t spend money on ingredients for your cafe, the game hand-waves it away as magical food that never runs out. When the clock strikes 6 AM, you just keep on going. It seems I’m the only thinking creature in an empty, lifeless world. Several times I’ve spoken to a person who was previously moving, and as soon as I exit dialogue with them, they stop and stand completely still until I either unload the cell or reset the game. Or how to stop walking in circles once they start. The AI in this game doesn’t seem to understand what walls are. You cannot fish, collect items, craft items, farm plants, or interact with the world in any meaningful way, besides talking to NPCs. You know that part where I said that this is Animal Crossing but you run a Cat Cafe? I mean that. There’s no grid system in this game, and nothing stops you from placing objects through walls. The good thing is that you can place objects wherever you want, the bad thing is that you can place objects wherever you want. You have a cafe that you can buy furniture for and decorate however you want it to look. This means that you pet a cat the exact same way that you pet a dog, horse, pig, deer, raccoon, grizzly bear… So you’re not really petting a crow, you’re petting a loud black cat with wings. You can pet every single animal in this game, and there is exactly one animation for all of them. I'll now attempt to explain what exactly I mean. Everything just sort of "feels" wrong, with no clear indication as to why. The premise of Calico is "what if Animal Crossing, but you run a cat cafe?" That's an amazing idea, however, the game is a perfect example of "death by a thousand cuts". It hurts my heart to give this a negative review.
